  Project Description

  When I think about what makes a community vibrant, it is quite easy to recognize that it is never just one thing. It is the combination of many parts that come together to make a place truly special. Those parts are made from the people who live there. To break it down even further, what is it that makes us who we are? Where do our uniqueness come from? How have our experiences shaped us into the people we are? What sets us on fire and gives us passion and direction? These are the questions I love to ask people as I am getting to know who they are and where they have come from. It helps me to see the vibrancy of the community one slice at a time.

  During our information session it was abundantly clear that Lynn is a special place and the people who live there are interesting, lovely and passionate people. This artwork is designed to capture that beauty and individuality. I want to know who you are and where you have come from. How has the past shaped you into the human you are today? Tell me those stories.

  Community Engagement Plan

  The In Between has been designed to engage the community in two ways: collaborative and physical. I have incorporated an element of story telling into the center of the artwork. I will engage local community in a conversation about their past and the dreams they have for the future of Lynn. Their written responses will be cut out of the metal on the interior of the sculpture for everyone to read and reflect upon. The artwork is designed to encourage a physical exploration. There will be a space between the two faces for you to walk, stroll and run through. The open space is metaphorically our present. It is a place where we hold the tension of our past and look towards the future.

  I have designed a community engagement process that can either be in person or online, depending on the national level of safety and health for the fall season in 2021. I will be creating a conversation with Lynn residents about their past and about the future dreams they have for Lynn.

  For this project, it is critical for me to reach residents that span the spectrum in age and cultural diversity. I plan to partner with Girls Inc., the Boys & Girls Club and the Lynn Public School District to capture youthful demographic. I plan to work with the Lynn Public Library to create a booth or a response station that people can participate in. In the past, the public library is a great place to reach a diverse population. I would also like to capitalize on local events that are happening, such as farmers markets, festivals, art fairs, etc. that would garner public participation from a wide audience. If it is safe to do so, I would like to partner with a few local nursing homes, to engage with the oldest and perhaps wisest members of Lynn. At each event, I would describe the project and show models of the final design, explain the prompt and encourage handwritten participation. Ideally, this would happen in person and would be captured on postcards that allow for individual handwritten responses. However, I can create an online model if we are unable to meet in person.

  Plan de participación comunitaria

  Project Description

  Lynn has the seashore, which factors in the lives of many people who live in the city. This sculpture celebrates the ocean and the spirit of creativity. It is playful and free-wheeling, with a practical element as well. The base of the sculpture and the piece itself is something people can interact with as a place to meet, to sit and rest, to place bags or parcels on, or just to provide a pleasant presence as people walk by. Because much of the artwork will be created with the public, it will have the input of many hands and is connected to the community through the fabrication process. This bench concept includes a circular cement base and a vertical sculpture featuring an art-deco fish balancing a series of ocean creatures on its nose. The sculpture itself will be made from eps foam covered with layers of fiberglass mesh and cement, decorated with mosaic. The circular cement bench will also have a mosaic border.

  Community Engagement Plan

  As a teaching artist, I have created artwork in a variety of mediums with students and participants of all ages. I have led community art-making workshops at the Lynn Museum and LynnArts for several projects. These include workshops on Lynn History such as the legend of pirate treasure in Lynn Woods, Jan Matzeliger’s lasting machine, and a series of workshops where participants created the mosaic shoes at the top of the Stories of Lynn mural and mosaic.

  Much of the mosaic work on the proposed sculpture and the base can be created in workshops. The nice thing about mosaic is that it is a fairly easy medium to use; almost anyone can create a section of the project in an hour or two, and feel like they have made a valuable contribution to public art in their community.

  The workshops will be held at a central location, the Lynn Museum. Nonprofit organizations and community groups will be invited to schedule time to participate, and will have the opportunity to work on the mosaic for the sculpture within sight of where the finished piece will be installed.

  Project Description

  Periscope is a playful platform designed to connect the city of Lynn. It is a way to look at the city through a new lens. With this concept, we didn’t want the project to be about just a singular object. Instead, we wanted it to become a catalyst for exploring the city and community operating around it. The forms become directional components providing opportunities to read, converse, perform and more. It becomes a timeless landmark for the city while coexisting in harmony with the surrounding context. It becomes an opportunity that encourages one to explore the city and what it has to offer. Each form acts as a periscope that allows you to explore the world through the eyes of someone else. A kid can begin to see the city at the height of an adult and vice versa. It becomes a playful gesture encouraging people to slow down and look at the changing landscape around them. On each end of the directional components will be a vinyl graphic designed by a local creative with the distance to a specific location chosen by the community. It won’t say what the place is but instead encourage the person to discover what it might be. Periscope is a platform of open-ended play encouraging creativity, exploration, and community. It begins to breakdown barriers and connect the community as one.

  Community Engagement Plan

  As part of our design process, we believe in creating work for the community; the community must drive the process. We see our studio as a tool for the community to bring what they would like to see within their city or neighborhood. To start the process of this initial concept, we connected with several groups from Girl Inc., as well as other local community members in the area to hear how they viewed their city and what they would like to see more around Lynn. The common trend that we found was that everyone enjoyed simply wandering around Lynn and discovering new things to do and see, like the many murals popping up around the city. They also talked about going to the beach and showing off places they were proud of and though represented their Lynn. Through this initial engagement, we developed the concept of "Periscope", a piece of art that wasn't focused inward but instead was focused outward by becoming a platform to explore the city and its community in a new way.

  If selected, we are excited to continue to expand on these community engagement sessions as we develop the project. We want the community to decide on the locations that the installation directs you to and the views that the periscopes view in the immediate area the installation is located. The design we developed can be adapted to provide the community with an open-ended playable platform that feels connected to the city. We also want to work with local artists to help with the way finding component that would be a vinyl wrapped onto the structure that will lead you to specific locations or businesses that the community chooses. We see this component of the work being something that can change out and adapt with the growth and changes of the city. The open-ended design of the work allows for the community to put their own identity onto the piece.

  Playful, evocative, and a visual manifestation of community participation and pride, Laces of Lynn seamlessly ties the history of Lynn as a shoe mecca, to the values of a diverse and growing city today. Hopeful and inspiring, this colorful, iconic sculpture will be a catalyst for residents and visitors to find commonalities with each other and further develop community connectivity, a priority made all the more urgent by the isolation we have all experienced as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

  Community Engagement Plan

  Laces of Lynn will engage residents in a thoughtful reflection of community values and personal identity. Drawing upon my experience conducting community engagements to produce artworks that get to the heart of the community, each lace is built from words submitted by residents that represent personal attributes they hold dear. I have identified many potential community partnerships in addition to open public engagements and secured statements of interest from RAW Artworks, New Lynn Coalition, Pathways, Community Health Center and the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless. I have developed in-person and online guided workshops that use mindfulness to help residents identify words that reflect their uniqueness, and intend to secure around 450 responses for inclusion in the sculpture.

  As a tool for engagement, language offers few barriers, and its accessibility increases multi-generational and multi-cultural participation. The project invites inclusion of multiple languages to express local demographics and the visual representation of different languages instills community pride. By having residents identify their own personally cherished traits, we are gifted a collection of community values which demonstrate the universal human condition. This earnest approach is grounded in authenticity, and creates profound insight in often overlooked ways we can connect to others in our community.

  Project Description

  I am pleased to submit my application for the installation of Jumbo T-Jax at Lynn’s Mt. Vernon and Exchange Street Plaza. Many of my sculptures feature archways and large “portals” which allow the environment to be framed and viewed from different perspectives. I have chosen three possible sets of colors for the piece, two of which integrate elements of Lynn’s local landscape: One, colors chosen from the Lynn logo on the city website; the other from a found image of a sunset over Red Rock Park. My hope is that these palettes will connect the sculpture to other beautiful elements of the city. The title refers to the children’s game Jax/Jacks and the T station, perhaps proposing the scale of the train station might be that of child’s toy train set.

  Community Engagement Plan

  Community engagement is integral to my practice. In the past I have worked with school groups, dance troupes, and musicians to activate spaces with movement and performance. I look forward to the chance to partner with community groups in the city of Lynn who would like to take part in some of the activations and performances around the piece (once health guidelines will allow).

  My plan for engaging with the community is to use the sculpture to teach local kids about art and fabrication. My sculpture in particular is well-served to teach, as I always start my design process with simple paper models that are a good way to encourage kids to think creatively about their own artistic ideas. I would start by teaching a seminar myself near the piece -- I'm a parent to two young kids and love working with kids of all ages. After that, the curriculum could be passed to schools for art teachers to use directly, especially to schools whose kids might pass by the sculpture on their daily commute. The goal of the curriculum is to create scale models of landscape-inspired sculptures from 2-D shapes.

  Es un placer presentar mi propuesta de instalación Jumbo T-Jax para la plaza de Mt. Vernon y Exchange Street de Lynn.
