Project Description

Lynn has the seashore, which factors in the lives of many people who live in the city. This sculpture celebrates the ocean and the spirit of creativity. It is playful and free-wheeling, with a practical element as well. The base of the sculpture and the piece itself is something people can interact with as a place to meet, to sit and rest, to place bags or parcels on, or just to provide a pleasant presence as people walk by. Because much of the artwork will be created with the public, it will have the input of many hands and is connected to the community through the fabrication process. This bench concept includes a circular cement base and a vertical sculpture featuring an art-deco fish balancing a series of ocean creatures on its nose. The sculpture itself will be made from eps foam covered with layers of fiberglass mesh and cement, decorated with mosaic. The circular cement bench will also have a mosaic border.

Community Engagement Plan

As a teaching artist, I have created artwork in a variety of mediums with students and participants of all ages. I have led community art-making workshops at the Lynn Museum and LynnArts for several projects. These include workshops on Lynn History such as the legend of pirate treasure in Lynn Woods, Jan Matzeliger’s lasting machine, and a series of workshops where participants created the mosaic shoes at the top of the Stories of Lynn mural and mosaic.

Much of the mosaic work on the proposed sculpture and the base can be created in workshops. The nice thing about mosaic is that it is a fairly easy medium to use; almost anyone can create a section of the project in an hour or two, and feel like they have made a valuable contribution to public art in their community.

The workshops will be held at a central location, the Lynn Museum. Nonprofit organizations and community groups will be invited to schedule time to participate, and will have the opportunity to work on the mosaic for the sculpture within sight of where the finished piece will be installed.

La costa y el mar de Lynn son una parte importante en la vida de la ciudad y sus residentes. Esta escultura celebra el océano y la creatividad. La escultura estará hecha de espuma eps, capas de malla de fibra de vidrio y cemento, y será decorada con mosaicos. La banca también tendrá un borde en mosaico.

Plan de participación comunitaria

Como artista docente, he creado obras en diferentes medios con estudiantes y públicos de todas las edades. He dirigido talleres de arte en la comunidad para proyectos con el Museo de Lynn y con LynnArts. También he coordinado talleres sobre historias como la leyenda del tesoro pirata en Lynn Woods y la máquina eterna de Jan Matzeliger, además de una serie de encuentros donde las personas participantes hicieron zapatos en mosaico para el mural Historias de Lynn.

Gran parte del trabajo de mosaico de la escultura propuesta y de la base se pueden hacer en talleres. Una ventaja de usar esta técnica es que es bastante fácil de usar; casi cualquier persona puede hacer una sección del proyecto en una o dos horas y sentir que es parte de una valiosa contribución al arte público de su comunidad.

Los talleres se llevarán a cabo en un lugar céntrico, el Museo de Lynn. Se invitarán a participar de estos a organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro y grupos comunitarios, que trabajarán en la elaboración del mosaico para la escultura mientras están lugar donde se instalará la pieza terminada.
