About Whyte's Laundromat
The Whyte's Laundromat site at 83 Willow Street in downtown Lynn has been a vacant and contaminated property for decades. The site of a laundry facility from the 1930s to the 1990s, the property is contaminated and the pollutants have seeped vertically into the soil and groundwater, affecting nearby properties. The plume of toxins poses a threat to the indoor air of existing and future occupied buildings in the area. The site has been vacant since 2000 when the building was demolished. The Economic Development and Industrial Corporation of Lynn (EDIC/Lynn) has leveraged nearly $1M from MassDevelopment and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to research the amount of pollution on the site and begin cleanup. Lynners have talked about the importance of revitalizing vacant properties such as this one, including in our Downtown Lynn Cultural District Rapid Recovery Plan.
Visioning for the Future of Whyte's
In 2022, the City of Lynn and the Economic Development and Industrial Corporation of Lynn was awarded $50,000 money from MassDevelopment to explore possible redevelopment in the area. This money helped us understand what redevelopment is possible given economic, zoning, and space constraints at 83 Willow Street and select surrounding properties which are affected by the contamination of that site.
Current Cleanup Work
In May 2023, the City of Lynn and EDIC/Lynn were awarded a $500,000 cleanup grant from the U.S. EPA to carry out additional remediation work on Whyte's Laundromat. In February 2024, we hired Verdantas as our Qualified Environmental Professional to assist with next steps in cleaning up the site. Right now, we are working to conduct further assessment on the property and its surroundings and to secure the site with fencing.
Analysis of Brownfields Cleanup Alternatives
The City hosted a meeting on May 2, 2024 to share progress on the site and the plan for future cleanup work. This launches our month-long public comment period on our Draft Analysis of Brownfields Cleanup Alternatives (ABCA), which is open through Sunday, June 2. Video coming soon.

Street level retail on slab with parking and affordable housing above.
So many people are being priced out of the downtown (and Lynn) and people just starting out and/or on low or fixed incomes can't afford local housing options.

Green house for the food Project
The community and Food Project would really benefit from a greenhouse the one at North Shore community college is not acceptable to continue growing food in a maximum way the city of them deserve better quality of food and the kids deserve a better way of farming.

City farm/community garden
Provide more green space and access to fresh vegetables, create a community garden/farm space. Community members can maintain the space and cultivate their own produce. The space can also be multi purpose and used for educational opportunities for children in the area as well as a place for families to visit. The space could also include different stalls similar to farmers markets where local producers could sell their items and some of the proceeds from the stall rentals used to maintain the space. There are many examples of these types of urban farms/gardens around the world that provide countless benefits to their communities

Open Space - retail, event, and food vendor friendly area.
keeping conscious of the ongoing development of housing we need to ensure we maintain open spaces accessible for community needs. Kiosk friendly retail (Similar to artist row in salem) allowing local artists to rent space for sales, community hosted events focusing on local art and culture. Additional open space and be used for off street food trucks and outdoor dining.
