<p><a href="#Espanol">En Espa&ntilde;ol</a></p><p>EDIC/Lynn and the City of Lynn Planning Department are working together to assess and cleanup brownfields throughout Lynn. A brownfield is a property where actual or possible contamination complicates the use of that property. Brownfields can be vacant buildings or empty lots that no one can or will develop because of the real or perceived environmental issues.</p><h3>Whyte&#39;s Laundromat (83 Willow Street)</h3><p>One of the most challenging brownfields sites in Lynn is <a href="https://lynnincommon.com/whytes-laundromat" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><strong>Whyte&#39;s Laundromat</strong></a> at 83 Willow Street in downtown Lynn. It has been a vacant and contaminated property for decades. The site of a laundry facility from the 1930s to the 1990s, the property is contaminated and the pollutants have seeped vertically into the soil and groundwater, affecting nearby properties. The plume of toxins poses a threat to the indoor air of existing and future occupied buildings in the area. The Economic Development and Industrial Corporation of Lynn (EDIC/Lynn) has leveraged nearly $1M from MassDevelopment and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to research the amount of pollution on the site and begin cleanup.</p><p>In May 2023, the City of Lynn and EDIC/Lynn were awarded a $500,000 cleanup grant from the U.S. EPA to carry out additional remediation work on Whyte&#39;s Laundromat. In February 2024, we hired Verdantas as our Qualified Environmental Professional to assist with next steps in cleaning up the site.</p><p><a href="https://lynnincommon.com/whytes-laundromat" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Learn More</a></p><h3>Previous Success Story (870 Western Avenue)</h3><p>The former Sousa Gas Station was taken via tax title by the City of Lynn and transferred to EDIC Lynn to remediate the property. EDIC Lynn was successful in applying for and receiving a $200,000 EPA Cleanup Grant and leverage an additional $40,000 to clean up the site for future reuse and redevelopment. The parcel was subsequently acquired by Lynn&#39;s Neighborhood Development Authority and the result will be 6 new townhouses coming online in the not-too-distant future. Two of the Townhomes will be set aside for first-time home buyers and will be part of an affordability portfolio, and the remaining four will be market rate. The project is part of a $6 million dollar investment in the West Lynn area, now called Orchard Grove.</p><style>

<p><a href="#Espanol">En Espa&ntilde;ol</a></p><p><br></p><p>The urban forest is made up of all the woody vegetation in a city. In Lynn, that&rsquo;s all the trees lining our streets, in our public parks, around our schools and businesses, in our cemeteries, and even on private properties.</p><p><br></p><h1>Trees Matter!</h1><p><a href="https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/how-do-trees-and-green-spaces-enhance-our-health-202404193034" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Urban trees provide so many benefits</a> - ones we think about a lot, like shade during heat waves, and stormwater absorption during floods - and ones we might think about less often, like wildlife habitat, clean air, healthy soils, and happier and safer communities. Trees also filter pollutants out of water, produce fresh air, absorb carbon dioxide, store carbon in their wood, beautify our neighborhoods, make us feel mentally and physically better, and they can even increase property values. </p><p>Trees in the city keep us cool and mitigate the urban heat island effect, which results in hotter neighborhoods where trees have died or have been removed, or where they were never planted in the first place. Trees bring people together - to do intergenerational good. The trees we plant, maintain, and protect will benefit both our generation and Lynners of the future. </p><p><br></p><h1>Urban Forest Plan</h1><p>Urban forest management involves tree inventory and assessment, tree planting, tree pruning, soil management, pest and disease monitoring and treatment, permitting, removal of dead or dying trees, community engagement, and much more. It&#39;s a necessary part of city operations, because an <a href="https://wwv.isa-arbor.com/education/resources/CNMTArboristNewsArticle.pdf" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">unmaintained urban forest costs more than an actively-maintained one</a>. </p><p>To carry out the best possible urban forest management, create jobs, and improve resilient urban tree canopy citywide, the City of Lynn needs a sustainable Urban Forest Plan. Check back soon for updates on the Urban Forest Plan public process!</p><p><br></p><h2>Urban Forestry Fellowship</h2><p>In 2023, Mayor Jared Nicholson and the Planning Department responded to enthusiastic residents and worked to secure a $550,000 urban forestry grant. The grant allowed Lynn to hire an Urban Forestry Fellow for the next three years (2024 - 2027) to oversee the management, care, and preservation of trees in the City alongside the Tree Warden, DPW, and Community Development staff.
