About This Project

The viaducts are the storefronts underneath the train tracks by Mount Vernon Street. Built in 1913, these spaces used to house businesses, but have been empty for a long time. Regardless, the area is still very active: the farmer's market utilizes the spaces for storage, and many community organizations have hosted events or worked to install art in the area (including Lynnstallation).

Right now, we have an opportunity to rehabilitate the viaducts and turn them into safe, active, and welcoming spaces for our community. The MBTA is designing necessary improvements to Lynn's commuter rail station and train tracks. The City hopes to coordinate with the MBTA to identify how we can work together and restore the viaducts as a community asset.

In 2021, MassDevelopment awarded EDIC/Lynn $5,000 in Real Estate Services Technical Assistance Services. The City and EDIC will use this money to work with Luz Studios to learn more about what the community would like to see in the viaducts and to better understand the structural and architectural improvements needed to make that vision possible.

We'll be building on previous work, including what we heard from the community in the Downtown Lynn Cultural District Rapid Recovery Plan and during Lynn's participation in MassDevelopment's Transformational District Initiative.

Dozens of people participated in this process, whether in-person or online, to tell us what they wanted to see in the viaducts. Some of the most common desires were for food markets and cultural events; collaborative work spaces; micro retail and businesses; and a skate park or similar recreational space. Using this feedback, Studio Luz found examples for us to consider in design and even put together a few renderings of what the space could look like. What's Next?

The MBTA is working hard on designing the necessary station improvements, which will affect what they are able to provide in the viaduct space. The City is working collaboratively with the MBTA to find opportunities to make this community vision a reality once the station improvements are complete.
