The City of Lynn and St. Mary’s Lynn are undertaking the renovation of the General Electric Athletic Association (GEAA) recreation complex located at 663 Summer Street. The project proposes the upgrade of the existing park area into a flood resilient recreational facility serving the needs of both the City and St. Mary’s.
The fields, courts, and other recreational amenities located on the property have long been in disrepair, and given the current state of the site, there is very limited use or benefit to the community. The property is located in the flood plain further complicating availability, field maintenance and future reconstruction of the Park. The City has been working over the past several years to study and develop a park redesign that is more resilient to flooding and better meets the community’s needs.
The City is now partnering with St. Mary’s in an innovative public-private partnership to advance this effort, resulting in a redeveloped park to serve both the City’s and St. Mary’s recreational and athletic facility needs. Building off of foundational work carried out by the City and a feasibility study carried out by St. Mary’s; a concept plan has been developed which incorporates preferred site features as identified by the Lynn Community, St. Mary’s, and the General Electric Athletic Association. The partners, supported by interested benefactors, will be providing matching funds to complete design, public engagement, and environmental permitting at the local, state and federal levels. This phase is expected to last approximately 24 months with construction estimated to begin in spring of 2028.
Through this partnership, St. Mary’s is committed to leading the philanthropic efforts to fund construction of the park as reflected in the concept plan. Reconstruction of the park will provide much-needed practice facilities for its teams, and improved recreational facilities and access to athletic fields to the community. Along with the reconstruction of the complex, the school will forgo the use of various parks around the city and instead utilize a single location practice facility for its interscholastic athletic teams.
This partnership will provide an expedited timeline for the reconstruction of the park given limited resources at the local, state, and federal levels and provide neighborhood and broader community updated recreational amenities and athletic facilities not currently available in the recreational complex.
